What makes 7 Hours Islamic and Medieval Cairo Private Tour a unique experience ?
You will visit the Gayer Anderson museum which consists of two houses from the 16th and 17th century that are both built with a unique architectural style and boast antique furniture from all over the Middle East. Typically, we’ll spend 30-50 mins here before walking over to our next stop (5-10 mins).
Completed in the year 879 CE, the enormous Mosque of Ibn Tulun is the oldest mosque in Cairo that is still in its original form. Visitors are free to climb the Minaret for a great view. We will then drive over to the next mosque.
The madrasa-mosque of Sultan Hasan remains one of the most ingeniously designed mosques in the history of Islamic architecture (a must-see for any architecture lover). Following this visit, we will drive over (10-15 mins) to the citadel.
Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a massive and exquisitely carved gateway, which grants access to a seemingly narrow and dimly lit corridor. This corridor opens up into a spacious courtyard, boasting a serene ambiance and featuring a prominent domed fountain at its center. Surrounding this sunlit square are four majestic vaulted halls, known as iwans, housing the madrassas or educational institutions affiliated with the four distinct Sunni Islamic schools of thought: Shafi’i, Maliki, Hanafi, and Hanbali.
The Saladin Citadel, originally constructed during the medieval Islamic era in Cairo, has undergone subsequent development by Egyptian rulers such as Mohammed Ali. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979, it stands as a testament to its historical significance. It holds three mosques and three museums inside that can be visited. We’ll head back on the road to go to the khan il khalili market and within 15 mins, we’ll be taking in its exotic aromas and historic architecture.
Khan el-Khalili, located near the citadel of Cairo, is a bustling and vibrant market that immerses visitors in the rich tapestry of Egyptian culture. With its labyrinthine streets, traditional shops, and lively ambiance, it offers a captivating experience where one can explore a variety of authentic crafts, enjoy aromatic spices, haggle for unique souvenirs, and savor traditional Egyptian tea in cozy cafes.
