The mysterious Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa in Alexandria were discovered a little more than a hundred years ago when a donkey disappeared into a hole in the earth. What was uncovered was a complex of 3 story underground catacomb. The column rises out of the sparse ruins of the Temple of Serapeum, a magnificent structure that stood here in ancient times.
It’s a 15th century Islamic fortress built to protect the city from invading Crusaders. The Qaitbay Citadel is located on the northeast part of Pharos Island, on the exact spot that was once home to the famous lighthouse of Alexandra.
