Abusir houses a total of 14 pyramids and served as the main royal necropolis during the Fifth Pharaonic Dynasty. The quality and construction of the Abusir pyramids is relatively inferior to those of the Fourth Dynasty at Giza; perhaps due to a decrease in royal power or economy. In size, they are smaller than their predecessors, and were built of local stone.

The major pyramids at Abusir were built as stepped pyramids, although the largest of them is that of Neferirkare is believed to have originally been built as a step pyramid some seventy metres in height and then later transformed into a complete” pyramid by having its steps filled in with loose limestone casing.
