Access to the interior of Karnak Temple in Luxor, Egypt, requires a separate ticket.

The Karnak Temple Complex near Luxor, Egypt, is an extensive ensemble of temples, pylons, chapels, and other structures in various stages of decay. The name “Karnak” originates from the Arabic term “Khurnaq,” signifying a “walled settlement.”

Most of the remaining structures within the complex trace back to the New Kingdom, initiated during the reign of Senusret I (reigned 1971–1926 BCE) around 2000-1700 BCE.

During the 18th dynasty of ancient Egypt, the area surrounding Karnak was called Ipet-isut, meaning “The Most Selected of Places.” It served as the primary temple for the Theban Triad, led by the deity Amun. In 1979, Karnak was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List alongside the rest of the magnificent city of Thebes.

El-Karnak, situated 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) north of Luxor, derives its name from the adjacent and partially enclosed Karnak complex.

The mortuary temple of Hatshepsut, also referred to as the Temple of the Holy of Holies (Egyptian: sr-srw), was constructed during the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt in the era of Pharaoh Hatshepsut. This architectural marvel, situated on the opposite bank of the Nile from Luxor, is a prime attraction for enthusiasts of ancient construction.

Carved into the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari, its three expansive terraces tower over the sands below. Her pyramidal mausoleum, El Qurn, stands on the same mountain range as her tomb, KV20. Positioned at the desert’s edge, one kilometer to the east lies the valley temple, linked to the main complex via a causeway. The entire structure stands opposite Hatshepsut’s significant addition to the Temple of Karnak, the grand Eighth Pylon, from where the Glorious Festival of the Valley procession commenced.

The Valley of the Kings has two names in the Coptic and Arabic languages, “dme” (also spelled “dme” in Arabic) and “Wd al-Mulk,” respectively. This valley in Egypt, also referred to as “Wd Abwb al-Mulk” in Arabic, was the site where rock-cut tombs for pharaohs and esteemed nobles of the New Kingdom were carved over a period spanning more than 500 years, from the 16th to 11th centuries BC (during the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Dynasties of Ancient Egypt).

The colossal stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, recognized as the Colossi of Memnon (Arabic: el-Colossat or es-Salamat), stand before the now-ruined Mortuary Temple of Amenhotep III, once the grandest temple in the Theban Necropolis. These landmarks have been known since 1350 BC, recognized by the Greeks, Romans, early modern explorers, and Egyptologists.

Between 20 and 250 AD, 107 Greek and Latin inscriptions were etched into the sculptures, many referring to the Greek mythological figure Memnon, whom the statue was mistakenly presumed to portray during that period.

The association between the Greek name for the entire Theban Necropolis, the Memnonium, and the designation of the northern colossus as “Memnon” has sparked heated debate among experts.
