The Abu Simbel Temples were originally carved into solid rock cliffs but were moved in the 1960s so that they would not be submerged by the Aswan High Dam. They now sit near the banks of Lake Nasser. Most tours of the temple complex depart from the city of Aswan and include transportation and a guided tour of the temples.
Things to Know Before You Go
- The Abu Simbel temples are a must-visit sight for archeology and history buffs.
- The Abu Simbel site is hot and sunny, so bring protective clothing.
- Anyone hoping to take photos in the temples will need to purchase a camera pass.
- The site’s rocky, sandy terrain makes wheelchair access difficult.
- There are limited bathroom facilities between Aswan and Abu Simbel, so ask your driver or guide well in advance if you’d like to make a stop.
How to Get There
Most tours to the Abu Simbel Temples depart from Aswan, which is about 179 miles (288 km) away, and include a 3–4 hour drive each way. Alternately, you can book a tour that includes a 30-minute flight from Aswan to Abu Simbel Airport to shorten your trip. You can also choose to stay in Abu Simbel for the night.
When to Get There
The temple complex is crowded during peak tourist season, and most travelers arrive mid-morning (following the drive from Aswan). To see the site without the crowds, opt for a private tour with a flexible departure time or stay in the town of Abu Simbel.
Watching the Abu Simbel Sun Festival
Twice a year—on October 22nd and February 22nd—the sun briefly illuminates the four statues in the central chamber of the Great Temple of Ramses II. These dates are marked by the Abu Simbel Sun Festival, and the event draws big crowds. See the early morning illumination, then enjoy live music, dancing, and traditional foods throughout the rest of the day.
